Jewelry and Colorful Clothes

The Quran does not prohibit wearing jewelry or colorful clothing, as long as it is done with modesty and does not promote immoral behavior. On the contrary, the Quran affirms that adornments, such as jewelry and beautiful clothing, are blessings from God meant to be enjoyed by His servants.

Quranic Evidence

Adornments Are a Blessing From God

Qul man ḥarrama zīnata Allāhi allatī akhraja liʿibādihi wa-ṭ-ṭayyibāti mina ar-rizq? Qul hiya lilladhīna āmanū fī al-ḥayāti ad-dunyā khālisatan yawma al-qiyāmah; kadhālika nufassilu al-āyāti li-qawmin yaʿlamūn.

Say, "Who prohibited the zinat of God which He has produced for His servants and the good provisions?" Say, "They are, during the worldly life, for those who believe, and are exclusively theirs on the Day of Resurrection." We thus detail the revelations for a people who know.

(7:32)

This verse confirms that all forms of adornment (zīnah), including jewelry and beautiful clothing, are blessings from God and lawful for believers to enjoy.

Command to Wear Adornments in Worship

Yā-banī Ādama khuḏū zīnatakum ʿinda kulli masjidin wa-kulū wa-ishrabū wa-lā tusrifū; innahu lā yuḥibbu al-musrifīn.

O Children of Adam, take along your zinat to every masjid, and eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like the excessive ones.

(7:31)

Here, God commands believers to wear their adornments when going to the masjid, showing that wearing beautiful clothing and jewelry is not only permissible but encouraged, especially during acts of worship.

Moderation and Decency

While adornments are lawful, modesty and decency are central to a believer's conduct. God commands believers to maintain balance in their appearance and avoid excessiveness:

Wa-lā tusrifū; innahu lā yuḥibbu al-musrifīn.

But do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like the excessive ones.

(7:31)

This guidance ensures that adornments do not lead to vanity or extravagance.

Conclusion

Wearing jewelry, makeup, and colorful clothes is perfectly lawful as long as:

  1. It does not violate modesty or decency.
  2. It is not intended to incite immorality or sexual attention.
  3. It does not lead to excessive or wasteful behavior.

God has created adornments as blessings for His servants, and believers are encouraged to enjoy them within the boundaries of righteousness. No one has the authority to forbid what God has made lawful:

Do not utter lies that are portrayed by your tongues: "This is lawful, and that is unlawful," to fabricate lies and attribute them to God. Those who fabricate lies and attribute them to God will not succeed. (16:116)

Believers are reminded to balance gratitude, modesty, and wisdom in enjoying the blessings that God has provided.
