Intercession
The notion that someone other than God can plead on behalf of individuals for forgiveness or salvation is fundamentally inconsistent with the teachings of the Quran. The Quran categorically rejects intercession and warns believers against attributing divine powers to anyone other than God.
Intercession Belongs Solely to God
The Quran explicitly states that all intercession is exclusively God's prerogative:
Qul lillāhi ash-shafāʿatu jamīʿā
Say, 'All intercession belongs to God.'
39:44
Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū anfiqū mimmā razaqnākum min qabli an yaʾtiya yawmun lā bayʿun fīhi walā khullatun walā shafāʿah.
O you who believe, give from what We provided you with before a Day comes in which there will be no trade, no friendship, and no intercession.
2:254
Wattaqū yawman lā tajzī nafsun ʿan nafsin shayʾan walā yuqbalu minhā shafāʿatun walā yuʾkhadhu minhā ʿadlun walā hum yunsarūn.
And beware of a Day when no self will avail another self anything, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be taken from it, nor will they be supported.
2:48
No Intercession for Disbelievers or Wrongdoers
The Quran confirms that intercession will not benefit those who die in disbelief or as wrongdoers:
Wa-istaghfir lahum aw lā tastaġfir lahum in tastaġfir lahum sabʿīna marratan fa-lan yaġfira Allāhu lahum.
Whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them, even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will not forgive them.
9:80
Walā taziru wāziratun wizra uḫrā.
And no burden-bearer bears the burden of another.
6:164
Ridicule of Intercession
God ridicules those who claim intercessors can save them:
Walaqad jiʾtumūnā furādā kamā ḫalaqnākum awwala marratin wa-taraktum mā ḫawwalnākum warāʾa ẓuhūrikum wa-mā narā maʿakum šufaʿāʾakumu alladhīna zaʿamtum annahum fīkum šurakāʾ.
You have come to Us each on his own, just as We created you the first time, and you have left behind you what We had provided for you. We do not see with you your intercessors whom you claimed were partners among you!
6:94
Intercession Cannot Change God’s Judgment
God's decrees are final, and no intercession can alter them:
Mā yubaddalu al-qawlu ladayya wa-mā anā bi-ẓallāmin li-l-ʿabīd.
The Word cannot be changed with Me, and I am not unjust towards the servants.
50:29
The Reality of Judgment Day
On Judgment Day, individuals will stand alone before God, with no intercessors or helpers:
Yawma lā tamliku nafsun li-nafsin šayʾan wa-l-amru yawmaʾidhin lillāh.
It is the Day when no self will possess anything to avail another self, and the command on that Day belongs to God.
82:19
Conclusion
The Quran emphatically rejects the concept of intercession, emphasizing God’s exclusive authority over judgment. Believing in intercession through prophets, saints, or any other being constitutes shirk (associating partners with God), which is the gravest sin.
Is God not sufficient for His servant? (39:36)
God’s mercy and justice are sufficient for every individual. Salvation depends on one’s personal faith, repentance, and deeds—not on the intercession of others.
